Day 01

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I want to feel more of a connection with fandom. I haven't been feeling fannish for months and that's not good.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Hmmm. Specifically things we're afraid to ask for? There isn't much I'm afraid to ask for...

1) All the genderswap AUs. Not just Rule 63, where a canonically cis man-or-woman becomes a cis the-other-one. Genderswaps where canonically cis characters are trans of the same gender (so for instance cis woman to trans woman). Genderswaps where canonically cis characters are trans of the same assigned-at-birth gender (so for instance cis man to trans woman or genderqueer/nonbinary individual). Genderswaps where about half of the canonical characters are Rule 63'd (or otherwise transmogrified), not just one or two prominent characters. ALL THE GENDERSWAPS. (Except if you take a canonically trans character and make them cis, I will be most displeased.)

2) All the racebending AUs. Or rather, all the racebending AUs that take canonically white characters and make them people of color. Or otherwise take people of the locally dominant ethnicity and make them not—so making Bakura Ryou of Yu-Gi-Oh! a white Brit instead of Japanese would be legit. (Black Brit or Indian Brit would be more interesting, mind you.)

3) I don't think there's a term for this, but all the AUs where a canonically abled character is disabled. Somebody's got asthma. Somebody needs a wheelchair. Somebody's got epic anxiety. Yadda.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Does your process change depending on the type of creating you're doing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've never figured out what inspires me, honestly. What motivates me—there's the "stories beating at the inside of my head" factor, and the "not enough stories featuring marginalized people" factor, and depending on the term the "this is a school assignment my grade depends on it" factor. (but obviously that last isn't fannish per se)

I'm not so good at breaking through blocks. Usually I just wait till they go away on their own.

I dunno, I'm not afraid to ask for much.

* October Daye fic featuring Gillian Daye-Marks.
** Gillian's too important to Toby to just vanish off the page, and she's too fascinating in herself.

* October Daye fic featuring someone trans.
** I kinda expect this is a nonissue in Faerie. If you can turn a girl into a fish, you can turn a trans girl into a cis girl. But that's extrapolation from canon, not actually canon, and not really fanon either—not popular enough, probably 'cause no one in the October Daye fandom but me cares.

* Indexing fic featuring a fairy tale or folk tale from Outside Europe.
** Because the Aarne-Thompson Index is, I'd lay money, predominated by European stories, leaving out a whole lot of stories of PoC origin.

* Sailor Moon Classic anime meta explaining the metaphysics.
** I haven't seen most of Classic in a very long time, but I seem to recall that every Big Bad wanted a different metaphysical something from people, and that's an awful lot of confusing metaphysics.

* Sailor Moon meta, pick a canon any canon, explaining the history of the Moon Kingdom et al in conjunction with the history of Earth as we know it outside canon.
** I cannot make "Prince of Earth" make sense in my head in any manner.

This may be cheating, but I'm going to rec my three most recent completed fanfics, because they're actually pretty reflective of my breadth as a fanficcer. Except for the bit where two are poetry; I swear I don't ordinarily do that much fanpoetry.

Fandom tends to clump together, and that's has both positive and negative effects. It's the basis of our support networks, our intertwined lives, but it also tends to isolate us and we forget the existence of other fans outside of our chosen place. Maybe it's time to reach out to fans on other platforms, in other places and say hello.

[community profile] imadeathing describes itself as a "multifandom multicraft festival". Fanworks in media that are not traditionally touched by fanworks, such as cross-stitch and papercraft. I hope there'll be a round three.

[community profile] bitesizedcleaning for cleaning in manageable chunks. Most days have challenge posts: take five, ten, or twenty minutes today to clean X. If you're not done when time runs out, no big.

The Fairest Of Them All is a long poem retelling Snow White in hexameter. The title character is mostly fantasy-Welsh, part fantasy-Japanese, because why the hell not, and her prince is a trans man, because why the hell not, and the seven dwarves are her loyal friends (including the prince) from all classes, because why the hell not.

Let Your Demons Run is an exploration of where the first demons in Supernatural came from, specifically (because [community profile] megexchange) including Meg, reputed to be Azazel's daughter. Multimedia experience pulling in the Books of Genesis and Enoch. Jossed, of course (I posited Metatron female, and I'm sure there's other things I can't think of offhand or don't know about due to not having seen past 9x04), but I'm really proud of it.

Now I'm Not Gonna Stop is a return to the not-quite-dead-yet fandom of my heart, Anne Walsh's Dangerverse AU of Harry Potter. (AO3 synned "whydoyouneedtoknow's Dangerverse" to "Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling". I'm pissed.)

Golden and Broken and Lost is the story of how Cinderella came to sing at Jack's Place in Seanan McGuire's song of that name. Cindy's black, because I could, and the Little Mermaid is Arabic, because I could, and the afternoon bartender is Kaguya-hime, because I could.

Day 13: recs for me:

I'm looking for Supernatural fic starring women. Gen, het, or femslash, don't particularly care, but (contrary to the impression my day 12 recs might have given) I am not currently after porn. I just want a tight focus on the female character(s).

day 14: fannish love letter )

Day 15: fannish memory:

I am pretty thoroughly spoiled on the future of the epic written by the fanfic author I used to live with. (We met because of that epic, actually.) Today she emailed me saying she was rereading her epic and found a bit posted in 2006, at least six hundred thousand words ago, foreshadowing a bit she hasn't posted yet.

:-D

(and no, if you know who I mean, I am not telling anybody anything)

It's a medium I don't think I've touched in ten years. Since new fandoms and pairings have obviously not been working out so well for me lately and it is practically impossible to find a medium I haven't tried, I hereby declare that this counts. Supernatural, Anna/Ruby, click for big.

Ruby and Anna looking soulfully into each other's eyes

And that would be why I haven't tried drawing in ten years. I know how to do it right. I just can't make my hands do what I want them to.

[community profile] spn_bitesized. I miss it.

I've been thinking about creating a successor comm, [profile] mini_spn or some such thing. Same mission of comment-sized fanworks for Supernatural, all media accepted, new themes to prompt for every week (or two), Pinboard account to keep track of prompts and fills. And now that it's not December anymore and the incoming workload has dropped off immensely, I can actually seriously consider doing it. I mean, I'm still working all the overtime, but it's catching up, not treading water or falling behind.

Thing is, [personal profile] somnolentblue assures me that bitesized was difficult to handle with a mod team of three, would be ridiculously difficult with two and flat out impossible with one, and four would probably be better than three.

So that's my three fannish things. Three co-mods.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Several fics at once: [archiveofourown.org profile] MoragMacPherson's Not Such As I Was series. Supernatural/Inception, Sam/Arthur and others. The premise here (though for some of this information you have to read the timeline, 'cause it's not yet in any fics) is that dreams are naturally too unstable to travel in as the Inception crew does, but something about Sam Winchester—and about someone a few months older than Sam, who vanishes off the face of the earth circa the back half of Supernatural S2—means much more stable dreams. (When some scientist finally isolates the stabilizing factor, reproducing it as a pharmaceutical involves cysteine; that's an amino acid which has sulfur in.) The fics are all basically Supernatural and Inception bouncing off each other given that premise and the subsequent history between Sam and Arthur. It's so much fun. Painful, painful fun. (The longest fic is the one based around Mystery Spot. That sort of painful fun.)

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I love this one to pieces and nobody else seems to: Talitha Rising, in which Jo Harvelle is the righteous woman and Jessica Harvelle (played by Adrianne Palicki, just to clarify) is the girl with the demon blood. I should probably give it more than four days before complaining about its not getting love, though. And possibly write more of the 'verse. (There is so much more 'verse.)

I'm also quite fond of My Soul to Take. Mary's trying so hard to make sure none of the backlash from her deal lands on anyone else, and so relieved when her deadline passes with no harm done...

Bending the Truth was a lot of fun to write, even given all the trouble I had keeping names straight. I'm kind of curious who had the nerve to produce the first public piece of art mocking or opposing Firelord Zuko, though.

this story has a happy ending had to have that title. (Even if every time I see it I get Diamond Rio stuck in my head. I'd follow you to Timbuktu like Scarlett followed Rhett...) Because it does, but that part isn't, can't be, on the page. Not with such a tight focus on the Winchesters (including Jess) and their family tragedy.

The Moon Is Just The Sun At Night—the challenge was to change the species of the pairing, so instead of Ruby the demon and Anna the fallen angel, I did Anna the demon and Ruby the fallen angel, and I racebent it for kicks (for given values of 'racebent'—pre-hell Ana is part Spanish, part Ohlone, and I'm not sure how she thought of herself at the time but today I'm pretty sure we'd call that Hispanic; post-hell Ana is played by Julie McNiven), and quite a lot of bitter ex-Catholic came out in the fic but I think the new backstory makes both women plausible enough bitter ex-Catholics themselves that that's all right.

And that is pretty much my 2012 in stories I wrote that I like. There's one more, but it's still anon. I'll come fix this post when it's not.

whydoyouneedtoknow, aka Anne Walsh, and [personal profile] damkianna. Both are fabulous authors who hit my big fic kink: MOAR LADIES = MOAR AWESOME.

damkianna avoids killing or otherwise writing out canon female characters—one of her big projects, Flying Blossoms, is a bunch of Five Thingses that are either 'five women X's mother might have been' or 'five things X's mother might have done', and in every instance the mother in question is someone never or rarely seen in Avatar: the Last Airbender. And in Imagine the Ocean and Listen to the Earth, the Avatar Gang is populated by an ever-increasing number of canon female characters. Suki. Yue. There's also a friendly Fire Nation commander OFC, Yin. The central plot point of Imagine/Listen is that Katara is the Avatar; I am dying to see what happens when damkianna gets hold of The Legend of Korra.

Anne makes use of original female characters as well as canon female characters—not that damkianna doesn't, but damkianna's epic doesn't rely on the OFCs the way Anne's epic does. The Dangerverse is named for the OFC who sets everything in motion, Gertrude 'Danger' Granger, Hermione's twenty-years-older sister who has psychic abilities and who marries Remus and with his help kidnaps Harry from his more-abusive-than-canon relatives and frees Sirius from Azkaban so that Sirius can marry OFC #2, Aletha Freeman, Lily's best friend, and with her have a kid, OFC #3, Meghan. Remus, Sirius, Danger, and Aletha collectively raise Harry, Hermione, Meghan, and Draco Black—yes you heard that right; Narcissa gets a Crowning Moment of Awesome into the bargain. And from there the changes just sort of spiral.

Anne and damkianna are the two authors I tried but failed to imitate with my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang last year, and the authors I am trying and hopefully succeeding to imitate with my [livejournal.com profile] sncross_bigbang this year. (It helps that Anne wrote A Widow in Waiting, first of the Chronicles of Glenscar, which is the 'verse I'm crossing with Supernatural, and I have conned Anne into doing beta work for my Big Bang.)

I'll come back to day twelve.

Supernatural 3x11 MYSTERY SPOT. This is the defining episode of Sam in seasons one through five. He goes utterly batshit crazy trying to save Dean, and when he thinks Dean is beyond saving, he shuts down into superhunter mode. I can't really explain my glee over this episode but it is beyond question my favorite of the series.

I would really appreciate a beta for my [livejournal.com profile] sncross_bigbang. Someone who doesn't mind not knowing the non-Supernatural canon, because said canon is not published yet. (Author of said is stuck in publishing limbo.) I have successfully conned said author into betaing me even though she does not know Supernatural, so I'm not worried about that side of things, but I'd really appreciate having someone who knows Supernatural canon to go 'wtf you doin' at me.
