why do I do this to myself

'This', in this case, being some permutation of 'get involved in debates with people who think the solution to unemployment is for the poor to go get jobs', 'get involved in debates with people who think art is a viable alternative to employment and luck is no factor', and 'get involved in debates with unknown Slacktivist commenters at all'.

Well, you're a better woman than I am (i.e. I generally squib out of internet arguments). So salute to your gumption and commitment to putting good ideas out there. :)

Because optimism is a survival strategy that works, even though it always seems like it shouldn't?

Maybe because you like arguing? That's not a bad thing. It allows you to hone your mind, find new evidence, and compete. There are also the social rewards that come from a lot of people being on your side against an outside force -- which, Fred's railing against "tribalism" notwithstanding, is not a bad thing.

Now that I have more spoons most days, sometimes I go back to Slacktivist when I am in the mood for semi-difficult socializing, because I know there will always be something there for me. It's good to stretch onesself, I think. Maybe you're doing something similar? Sometimes the response to a mountain is, "wow, that's a tall mountain." And sometimes it's, "I'm climbing that thing, I don't care how tough it is."
